One Billion Rising 2021

About One Billion Rising (OBR)

One billion Rising is a mass action to end violence against women. The global campaign was started on Valentine’s Day in 2012 as a call to action to rise against the violence towards women. The global campaign was founded by Eve Ensler, playwright and activist. The ‘Billion’ refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, or about one billion. Since it’s inception in 2012, the campaign has taken a strong hold worldwide where people across the globe come together to strike, dance, rise in defiance to the injustice suffered by women and demand to end violence against women.

With each year, the global campaign follows a theme that resonates with every woman across the global. This year we have seen mother earth thrown into turmoil, we realised that Nature and Women are an integral part of the earth- for life, for sustenance, for a better future. But the two are the ones that also receive the harshest of blows. Keeping in mind the connection of the two, this year the theme is, ‘Rising Garden’, calling out for revival, restoration and transformation.

OBR India and Kolkata chapter thus focused on ‘Rising Gardens, Rising Women’ inviting all to celebrate nature and womanhood while also focusing on issues of violence against women.

LGWCDC participated in One Billion Rising Program. 110 persons participated in this online event. Staff and SHG members of LGWCDC performed "Geeti Alekhya".(A combination of recitation and song). The main theme was gender inequality being practiced in Society and the need to raise voice against the atrocities on women.
