Amphan Releif Work
On 20th May 2020 super cyclone Amphan hit landfall at a speed of 165kmph at around 2.30pm and continued till 8.30pm in Kolkata and its neighbouring districts of North and South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan and East Midnapore. The cyclone has caused 72 deaths but has uprooted thousands of trees, electric posts, mobile towers as the storm gathered speed by evening.. it was the worst cyclone ever in living memory and the wind speed was so high that people could not move from one place to another. It is difficult to assess the loss of property right now but as per preliminary assessment over 2000 thatched houses have flattened and collapsed in our Project area comprising of four slum pockets namely 16 Bigha, Kankhuli, Aynalpara and Podirhati in Wards 8,10, 11 and 16 of Mahestala Municipality, 24 Parganas South . More than 1000 mud and brick homes have been severely or permanently damaged. Almost all tin/fiber roofs have been blown away.
Already the families are facing financial crisis due to lockdown for Covifd 19 and they have no cash in hand as they are out of work for the past two months. As it is they are having to arrange for food, hygiene materials, and access health care facilities with the limited money that they have and now they have to repair/rebuild their homes.
To support them in this hour of crisis LGWCDC with the help of its funding partners and well wishers have started relief operations by providing, dry ration, hygiene kits, medicines and other relief materials.
